My students find the written recall challenges really useful throughout the school year, and particularly as we approach exam time - they generally like to work at their own pace, either in class time or at home. Students can challenge themselves multiple times, simply by covering over previous responses, which means we’re able to get a lot of use from a single book, saving both prep time and paper. We also use the book for quick vocabulary quizzes at frequent and regular intervals - I or a nominate student simply shout out the French or English adjectives, the first team to shout out the correct answer wins a point - it’s a great no-prep quiz for vocabulary recall practice and revision, and just as effective as more formal vocabulary assessment or tests. The workbook is ideal for higher GCSE French students, and as a refresher and vocabulary audit for those moving into KS5 A Level French. There are two written recall challenges in the workbook: Written Recall Challenge One all four hundred adjectives in alphabetical order French-English - students are prompted for the English translation of a French adjective Written Recall ChallengeTwo this challenge also requires students to write the English translation from a French prompt, but the adjectives are in random, rather than alphabetical order - students often learn new vocabulary in alphabetical order, so this can be great practice in recall The challenges work well together, and we do revisit them regularly over quite a long period of time. When students are very focused on particular vocabulary, they’re able to embed the vocabulary really successfully, and feel confident using it in a wide range of contexts. It’s useful to work on creative writing in French regularly too, so that students can apply their French practically, and I encourage them to use a wide range of adjectives, thinking about synonyms too. ESL EFL ENGLISH SPEAKING PROMPTS CARDS 100 Q & A & REFERENCE BOOK a great way of getting your students talking without feeling ‘on the spot’, or worried about not getting their pronunciation and accent right in front of the whole class. The Q&A prompt cards offer structured talk opportunities, and focus on vocabulary, structures and general knowledge that they are likely to meet in both the beginning and more intermediate stages of their English learning. My students apply their developing English knowledge creatively and practically by crafting their own questions and answers, using the prompts as speaking frames. With focused and frequent practice, they begin to feel more confident about their language skills, using the Notes and Next Steps pages in the reference book to jot down their ideas. We also use the pages to note how they think their skills are developing, and how well they are beginning to understand fully both the range of vocabulary and grammatical concepts. We discuss as a whole-group to what extent they feel able to ‘produce’ language spontaneously and accurately, and with little or no support or hesitation. Equally importantly, encourage students to note what steps they might reasonably take to improve in the areas that they don’t feel quite as confident about. The language in this set is ideal for advanced beginner English students moving into intermediate English, and feature a range of differentiated questions and answers, addressing various aspects of English, such as f***forming questions, the use of the present and present continuous tenses, word order*** and so on. This is really important for language learners, who often attempt to impose the grammar and structures of their first language onto the new language they are learning. There are three differentiated ‘quick conjugation’ challenges, each with 50 conjugation questions, so 150 conjugations in total. My students really enjoy learning and practicing their conjugation skills with these kinds of workbooks, and I’ve created a series of them that they can access whenever they feel they need to do a little extra work on their conjugation. There’s also a 6-page answer key workbook - for me, answer keys are an integral element of the learning process with this kind of activity - they certainly help students develop more independence in their learning (and they do enjoy correcting their own and particularly each others’ work!), and they give students further opportunity to engage with the learning focus. There are 150 conjugations across 3 differentiated conjugation challenges. I use these kinds of workbooks in lots of different ways: for practice during the introduction phase, for independent choice in class time, for home learning, for practice and revision during vacation and at return to class, and for cover lessons - they’re really versatile, and ideal for KS4 Italian students who are moving on to more complex texts, and for***KS5 Italian A Level Italian*** students as revision. The workbook focuses on formation and conjugation, rather than usage, though it’s definitely useful to remind students of a number of things when focusing on or revising tense and verb formation and conjugation. For example, students do often try to conflate what they know about conjugation in their first language, and the language they are learning, and those with English as a first language frequently look for a word that is the equivalent of would, until they familiarise themselves with the fact that the notion of conditional is indicated in the verb ending. I see this a lot with the future tense too, and tend to introduce both tenses quite closely together. It’s also easy to confuse the future tense endings with the conditional tense endings, and targeted practice helps to address that really well. All my students, regardless of age, find playing the games a great way of consolidating their Spanish vocabulary, and developing their Spanish language skills in general - bingo is absolutely perfect for speaking, listening, reading, writing and spelling. This set includes 100 differentiated bingo grids and 40 calling cards - 20 in Spanish, and 20 in English - I always play with English calling cards too, as I’ve found it’s a really great way of further consolidating vocabulary - students have to focus carefully on the language ‘switch’, and translate what they hear really quickly. It’s definitely useful to have calling cards, so that you can keep track of what you’re calling out, and it also lets students be the bingo caller too, meaning they can play entirely independently of the teacher. There are twelve Spanish fruits in masculine, feminine, singular & plural in this set: the green apple the lemon the oranges the peach the raspberries the pineapple the kiwi the pear the bananas the green grapes the strawberry the watermelon I differentiate my bingo games by using picture-only cards, which are great for general vocabulary consolidation and recall, and listening skills. There are 40 9-square grids in total, and there’s a set of color (which I sometimes laminate so that I can just get them out whenever I need to - make sure students have wipe-clean pens on their tables!). I’ve also included the same grids in black and white - simply print these out. I sometimes give out pages with four grids on, and let students choose which order they play the grids in - they have multiple pages - or sometimes, I get the students to cut out the grids, place them in a small bowl or similar on tables and they then randomly choose grids - depending on the size of your class, you will definitely have several winners per game. These 60 challenge cards are perfect for developing Spanish language skills in general, as well as for practising and revising how to tell the time in Spanish. There are 60 cards, divided into two sets of 30 questions, full answer key and a recording sheet. The cards have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling, and really help students develop more independence in their learning, moving away from more teacher-led tasks and activities. The questions in this set are a straightforward introduction to, and practice of, o’clock and half past the hour in Spanish, and also to working and learning with challenge cards. I generally work with telling the time in Spanish quite quickly with my beginner Spanish students, as it lends itself really well to promoting speaking in the classroom, discussing daily routines for example. There are two questions: ¿Qué hora es? with a particular clock face, and students write the response on their recording sheet or in their workbooks. I’ve only used the plural form of the question in these cards. The second question is Verdadero o falso? and students write either verdadero or falso- where the answer is falso remind students to write the correct time for additional consolidation. The question card template enables students to apply their knowledge of language and time creatively and practically, which is integral to successful language learning. It’s also a really popular activity too - my students really enjoy creating questions for each other. The resource comprises the following non-editable files: Set of 60 question cards, 6 per A4 (8.5 x 11) paper. Laminating is definitely worth the extra prep time and expense, as the cards are far more learner-friendly, and stay in excellent condition for a long time, so you’ll be able to recycle them for years. 2-page answer recording sheet. GCSE GERMAN KS4 GERMAN KS5 GERMAN VERBS 500 high-frequency German verbs, listed alphabetically both German-English and English-German - a great learning support resource for KS4 German moving into advanced German A Level learners, and can also be given to KS3 German students, providing verb audit tool, and a language road map with learning goals, outlining the verbs they should ideally know by a specific stage in their learning. I create a lot of language learning reference books for my languages students, they’re really popular with my students, who like to have a bank of reference resources for both initial learning and longer-term revision. There are 42 pages in the book, and all 500 verbs are listed alphabetically German-English and English-German. Each German verb is indicated by irr; sein; sep for example, to denote irregular, conjugated with sein, separable. I use the reference book for quick vocabulary quizzes too - either I or a nominated student shouts out a German or English verb, with teams giving the corresponding German or English verb - I’ve found this is a really successful way of avoiding more formal vocabulary tests, while still providing students with frequent opportunity to refresh and embed essential German vocabulary. For UK teachers, these are roughly GCSE / Standard / age 16 examinations moving into advanced level, all examination boards (AQA, Edexcel, Eduqas, SQA). We use the Notes and Next Steps template to think about progress and vocabulary knowledge. Students find this really useful, and do like to map and track their own progress. It can be helpful in guiding and informing whole-group discussion about learning and progress in general, which is a really useful learning activity too - students also note down any new German verbs they learn, enabling them to build a really comprehensive verb vocabulary reference resource. The workbook focuses on formation and conjugation, rather than usage, though it’s definitely useful to remind students of a number of things when focusing on or revising tense and verb formation and conjugation. For example, language learners do often try to conflate what they know about conjugation in their first language, and the language they are learning, and with students whose first language is English, I frequently see students looking for a word that is the equivalent of would, until they familiarize themselves with the fact that the notion of conditional is indicated in the verb ending. It’s also easy to confuse the simple future tense endings with the conditional tense endings, and targeted practice helps to address that really well.
